Bohemia • the west and the north
Around Prague lies the Central Bohemian Region, with towns such as Kladno, Mladá Boleslav and Kutná Hora. To the west, Plzeň is the centre of the Plzeň Region and a busy university and industrial city. Karlovy Vary, famous for its spas and its film festival, leads the Karlovy Vary Region. In the north, Ústí nad Labem and Liberec are the main cities of their regions, close to the German and Polish borders.
South and east Bohemia
České Budějovice is the main city of the South Bohemian Region, and Český Krumlov with its castle is one of the most visited towns in the country. Further east, Hradec Králové and Pardubice are neighbouring regional capitals with large universities and hospitals. The Vysočina Region with Jihlava sits between Bohemia and Moravia, a quieter area of hills, forests and small historic towns on the main motorway between Prague and Brno.
Moravia and Silesia
Brno, in the South Moravian Region, is the second largest city in the country and has a big student population, trade fairs and a lively centre. Olomouc, with its historic square, leads the Olomouc Region. Zlín is the centre of the Zlín Region, and Ostrava, the third largest city, leads the Moravian Silesian Region in the industrial north east. Brno and Ostrava are the biggest markets outside Prague, followed by the other regional capitals.
How to search outside Prague
